JV2 Beats Keene on the Road, 8-0

The JV2 Bears clawed eight past a talented, but young, Keene side away from home on Wednesday night. They played hard from the first minute, only conceded three fouls, and demonstrated skill and respect all match.

The first goal of the match came about 10 minutes into play. Senior playmaker, Simon Taenzer, linked with new-recruit Alejandro Esparza Soto on the right side of Keene’s half before jetting into the box and sliding a cool finish under the goalkeeper to start the scoring. Keene was able to hold off the Bears for the next 10 minutes until Will Taylor penned himself on the scoresheet with a hard near-post finish after cutting inside of two Keene defenders.

“Taylor has oozed class and commitment since I met him his sophomore year, this was expected…” -Coach Bucket, 2022

Before Keene even had a chance to reset, Berkeley Chamberlain, done with his shift on defense, found the ball on the left-side of the field again. Chamberlain looked as though the ball was glued to his boots as he danced his way, zigging and zagging, through Keene’s defensive lines, before unleashing a vicious finish over the keeper and into the far-side netting, 3-0 30 minutes in. The first half was then rounded off with another nice finish. Taenzer picked up his second after a scuffed clearance landed right at his feet. Simon then took one touch to get the ball out of his feet before looping a 30-yard-curler into the top right of the net, far above the helpless Keene keeper, 4-0 to end the half.

The second half started just as quickly as the first. Goalkeeper/Multi-use-field-player Iver Skogerboe got himself on the ball about 40 yards from goal, played a one-two with Alejandro, and then somehow managed to wriggle through just about the entire Keene team on top of the box before slotting a nice finish to the right of the goalkeeper to make it 5-0 to the Bears. Both teams refused to slow the match down and each had a few chances after the fifth goal, Henry Steffen was called upon several times to make important stops, which he did with “swag”. The sixth goal came from an unlikely source, Gil “I can’t remember if I’ve played soccer before” Gordon. We’ve been working on Gil’s positioning in the box for the last few weeks of training and that work paid off as Gil snuck his way between the two Keene center-backs just on-top of the 6-yard-box to latch onto the end of Soren Stettenheim’s cross to lash in our 6th.

Senior Stettenheim then rounded off a wonderful display from the Bears with two break-through goals of his own. I’d describe them with greater detail, but anyone who’s seen Soren play knows he’s breaking down the left flank and toe-poking a lethal finish into the far-right post. I will describe his second goal though as this time he broke down the right! side of Keene’s half before finishing into the left-bottom corner of the net. He really keeps us guessing!

Another team effort from the Bears, and a well-deserved result.

Massive thank you to all involved in our Bus-Snack effort, the boys were thrilled to have a bus filled with food to return. Plus the coach appreciated the quiet bus ride home from 18 simultaneous food-comas!
